A graduation gift made from the place they're leaving

University is unusually easy to map: a handful of streets, a few buildings and a set of people, all inside a couple of miles, and then it scatters. Pin the first day, the seat in the library that got them through it, the walk they took when something didn't work out, the ten minutes in the coffee queue that turned into an afternoon — a few lines and a photo each. What to put on a graduation map

Three or four years in one place, and all of it about to scatter. Pin the first day, the 3am library, the walk when it went wrong, the day itself.

The first day: Where they turned up not knowing anyone, still checking a campus map. It's the one pin whose whole point is how little they knew at the time.
Where they found their people: The spot the first group photo happened, the one everybody swore was ironic. The same faces turn up in every other memory on the map.
The library at 3am: The reading room, the desk, the corner of the stacks. Absurdly specific, and that's the point — everybody knows exactly which seat was theirs.
The walk they took when it went wrong: The exam, the rejection, the week they wondered whether they belonged. Pin the place they went to clear their head rather than the thing itself.
The ordinary ten minutes: The coffee cart, the pizza place, the bench between classes. Nothing happened there, which is why it's the pin they'll linger on longest.
The day itself: Cap, gown, and wherever it actually happened. Add it last, after the week of noticing doors and benches they'd walked past for years.
