A map of your semester abroad, made while you're still there

An exchange is over faster than it feels, and the parts that vanish first are the ordinary ones — the walk to class, the supermarket, the name of the place that did the cheap lunch. Pin them as you go, with photos and a couple of lines each, and by the time you fly home the semester is already written up. It doubles as the thing you send your family: one private link, no account, and they can see where you actually are rather than asking.

What to pin on an exchange map

A semester abroad, mapped as you go: the first evening, the food you couldn't pronounce, the last night. Send it home so they can see it too.

The first evening
Before you knew your way anywhere — the walk you took to see the place you'd just moved to, still jet-lagged and slightly terrified. You only get one of these, and it's gone within a fortnight.
The first day on campus
The office you got lost looking for, and the people you'd met by the end of the afternoon. Pin where they're each from too, and the map quietly zooms out to half the world.
The food you couldn't pronounce
The stall with the queue down the alley, the thing you ordered by pointing. Write down what it was and what it cost — nothing dates better, and this is the pin you'll want when you're home and can't get it.
The weekend away
The night train, the cheap flight, the day trip that got you out of the city. One pin per place, and the photos more or less sort themselves.
The day you missed home
The afternoon it stopped being an adventure for a few hours. A map made only of the good weeks isn't the semester you actually had, and this is the pin you'll reread.
The last night
Wherever everyone ended up, and the gate you left from the next morning. Pin them before you fly — nobody ever goes back and adds these.

See one you can actually open

An example map of a semester in China, from the first evening to the departure gate. Tap a pin to open a memory; the Shanghai pins group into a numbered pin until you zoom in.

It's easier to write now than later.

Add a pin a week and the semester is documented by the time you fly home — and your family can follow it from one link.
